Class Summaries

Dear all,

In today's online session, we first reviewed the content from the previous class, focusing on comparing the educational systems of the US, UK, and Chile. We revisited formulas for making detailed comparisons, using adverbs and transition phrases useful for this purpose. We then worked individually on written discourse, using the chat feature on the platform for interaction.

Afterwards, we completed a brief exercise filling in sentences with irregular comparatives and superlatives. Following that, we watched a listening segment on contemporary educational problems and engaged in an integrative activity combining listening comprehension and speaking. This allowed us to practice making comparisons and expressing our opinions on improvements we would like to see in the educational system.

We concluded by reminding everyone to stay updated on any new communications regarding the ongoing strike.

Best regards,

Prof. Masías O.

Class Summaries

Dear Students,

I hope you're doing well. Here's a brief summary of today's virtual class on June 12th:

We began with a review of vocabulary related to the academic and student world (https://test-english.com/explanation/b1-vocabulary-explanations/education-b1-english-vocabulary/). Following that, we analyzed two charts summarizing the educational systems of the United Kingdom and the United States. After interpreting both charts together, we moved on to defining our Chilean educational system based on the information from both charts. Before comparing and contrasting the three educational systems, we reviewed the forms for making comparisons and talking about superlatives, focusing on A2+ level structures and including phrases and expressions related to a more academic register (https://academicguides.waldenu.edu/writingcenter/grammar/comparisons).

We then continued with an online quiz to consolidate our understanding of comparatives and superlatives.

Please review today's covered materials and complete any outstanding tasks. Stay updated on any developments regarding the strike, and feel free to reach out if you have questions or require further assistance.

Best regards,

Prof. Masías O.

Class Summaries

Dear Students,

In our last sessions, we began with a warm-up activities that involved analyzing four phrases related to studies and scholarships. By changing the verb in each phrase, we explored how the functional-pragmatic meaning of the sentence was altered. This activity served as an introduction to discussing the language funbctions of talking about responsibilities and advice.

With the former, we examined the dimension of modal verbs, specifically focusing on structures using must, should, and have to. To aid in understanding, we used infographics to better explain the topic.

Following this, we conducted a listening comprehension activity. We concluded the session with a collective evaluation of our understanding of the content through metacognitive reflection questions.

Please review the material, and I look forward to seeing you in our next class.

Best regards,

Dear Students,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to provide a summary of our virtual class held on Friday, the 24th.

We began the session by reviewing the details from our previous class to ensure everyone was up to speed. Following this, we conducted a brief group research into different formulaic approaches to paragraph and text composition.

After completing our researches, we shared our findings in a plenary session. This allowed us to compare and contrast the various approaches we had explored. Subsequently, I provided an overview of different structures of paragraphs, exploring the "Burger" model. We also explored the MEAL plan from Duke University and the RARE response model, which is used in some universities in the US.

To aid our understanding, I presented examples and reinforced the concepts with videos. We agreed that once the strike concludes, we will immediately proceed with the pending presentations.

Thank you for your active participation and engagement. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out.

Best regards,

Prof. Masías.
